Bulgaria’s Ekaterina Zaharieva faces tough questions on innovation chops

Ekaterina Zaharieva is about to sit her first test in the Brussels bubble.
Bulgaria was the only country to heed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s order to nominate both a man and a woman for the role. Ultimately, von der Leyen opted for Zaharieva, the ex-foreign minister and former minister for justice and for regional development.
The commissioner-designate for startups, research and innovation is likely to face questions on her plans to support and boost innovation, attract more investors and scale up success stories, with several pieces of new legislation to deliver this.
Big Pharma will be closely watching for her thoughts on her European Union Life Sciences Strategy, on which few details have yet to emerge.
We’ll be bringing you all the live action from 9 a.m. on Nov. 5.
